I'm Kirsten Agnello-Dean, a freelance Social Media Manager and Creative Copywriter who also works on email marketing, inbound content creation, and bunch of other random marketing related things when needed.
I actually just fell into freelancing naturally as my 1st professional gig was a part-time, freelance agency role. I wanted the job so I started freelancing and stuck with it. I've really enjoyed the flexibility and client diversity it has offered me.
SO many people. Connect with everyone that inspires you and will keep you current on emerging tech! Here are the main three types of handles to follow:
Getting clients to realize not being a full-time employee means you aren't available at the drop of a hat for calls, fast turnarounds, and constant rounds of revisions.
Taking an undefined role that ended up not aligning with my career goals. If a client doesn't know exactly what they want, it will be hard for you to understand the entire scope of the role or project and how it fits with your skill set. I'm all about learning along the way, but if the job misaligns with your goals, it won't be a good experience.
Start with a staffing agency — someone who has your back so you don't have to worry about chasing down late paying clients, putting money aside for taxes, can offer you health insurance, etc. It's freelancing the easy way. Yes, you could make more money per hour going it alone, but for me the perks outweigh the difference in pay rate.
